Why the BA Shredder Uses a Gas Strut Instead of a Coil Spring

A 2×72 belt grinder needs a reliable way to maintain belt tension.

Two common options are a coil spring and a gas strut.

Both can push the tension arm outward and keep the belt tight. The important difference is what happens when vibration or sudden movement enters the system.

A coil spring applies force.

A gas strut applies force and helps dampen motion.

What the Tension System Does

The tension system keeps the abrasive belt tight as it travels around the grinder’s wheels.

Why Damping Matters on a Belt Grinder

A 2×72 grinding belt may be traveling several thousand surface feet per minute.

At that speed, even small imperfections can excite the tension system.

Possible sources include:

  • Changes in grinding pressure

A tension system without damping can allow these small disturbances to continue moving through the grinder.

A Gas Strut Cannot Fix a Flexible Grinder

Installing a gas strut does not automatically create a smooth machine.

The components connected to it must be rigid.

If the tension arm bends or the pivot shifts sideways, vibration can move through the structure without properly engaging the damper.

The arm holds its geometry.

The pivot controls the direction of movement.

A two-pack of replacement gas struts can cost roughly the same as one premium ceramic grinding belt. Replacing one takes only a few minutes and requires no major disassembly.

Considering the improvement in belt stability and vibration control, that maintenance cost is insignificant.


A Coil Spring May Last Longer—but That Is Not the Whole Story

One argument in favor of coil springs is that they may last for decades.

That is true.

But longevity is only one performance requirement.

A solid steel bar would also last a very long time, but it would not provide a useful tension system.

The correct question is not:

Which component can remain installed the longest?

The better question is:

Which system provides the best grinding performance during its service life?

For the BA Shredder, the damping benefit of a gas strut is worth the possibility of replacing an inexpensive component years later.


Stable Tension Helps Tracking

The tracking wheel is mounted to the tension arm.

If that arm is bouncing, the tracking wheel is moving with it.

A controlled tension system helps the wheel maintain a more consistent position as grinding pressure and belt conditions change.

That supports:

  • More stable tracking
  • Better forward and reverse operation
  • Less belt bounce
  • More consistent belt tension
  • A smoother grinding experience
