Why Reverse Grinding Matters on a 2×72 Belt Grinder
A reversible motor is often advertised as a major belt-grinder feature, but reverse operation is not equally useful in every setup.
When a grinder is standing vertically, you would almost never use the platen area and work rest with the belt running upward. That direction would throw sparks, grit, and grinding debris directly toward the operator’s face.
The real advantage of reverse operation is more specific.
On the BA Shredder, reverse grinding is primarily useful when working on the unsupported slack-belt area across the top of the grinder, between the 2-inch idler wheel and the 3-inch tracking wheel.
Reverse operation also becomes much more useful when the grinder is tilted horizontally on its pivot. In that position, either belt direction may provide better access, visibility, spark control, or workpiece support.
Reverse grinding is not about running every operation backward. It is about having the correct belt direction available for the setup being used.
Reverse Grinding on a Vertically Mounted Grinder
In the normal vertical position, the belt moves downward across the platen and toward the work rest.
This is the correct direction for most platen and work-rest grinding because the belt force pushes the workpiece toward the rest while carrying sparks and debris downward.
If the belt is reversed, it travels upward through the platen area.
That creates several problems:
- Sparks and debris are thrown upward
- Grinding dust may travel toward the operator’s face
- The belt pulls the workpiece away from the rest
- The workpiece may become more difficult to control
- The work rest no longer supports the part in the intended direction
For these reasons, reverse operation is generally not useful at the platen or work rest while the grinder remains vertical.
The ability to reverse the motor does not mean every grinding position should be used in both directions.
The Primary Benefit: Top Slack-Belt Grinding
The most useful reverse-grinding area on a vertically mounted BA Shredder is the unsupported belt section across the top of the grinder.
This section runs between the:
- 2-inch upper idler wheel
- 3-inch tracking wheel
Because the belt is unsupported between those wheels, it can conform to curved or irregular surfaces rather than forcing the workpiece against a flat platen.
This makes the area useful for:
- Blending contours
- Rounding transitions
- Smoothing handle shapes
- Refining curved parts
- Removing sharp machining or grinding marks
- Creating softer, flowing surfaces
Depending on the shape of the part and how it must be held, one belt direction may provide much better control than the other.
Reverse operation allows the operator to choose which way the belt pulls the workpiece across that slack section.
Why Belt Direction Matters During Slack Grinding
A slack belt responds differently from a belt supported by a platen or contact wheel.
Because the belt can deflect, the workpiece may be pulled into the unsupported section depending on:
- Belt direction
- Contact angle
- Grinding pressure
- Part shape
- Hand position
Changing direction can make it easier to approach a curve from the preferred side or keep the belt from pulling the workpiece into an awkward position.
For example, a contour that is uncomfortable to grind with the belt moving one way may become much easier when the belt direction is reversed.
The benefit is not additional power. It is improved control over how the belt interacts with the shape of the part.
Reverse Grinding and Horizontal Operation
The BA Shredder can pivot from the normal vertical position into a horizontal grinding position.
Once the grinder is horizontal, forward and reverse operation become useful for a wider range of work.

Why a Grinder May Track Differently in Reverse
A grinder that tracks correctly in one direction may move the belt when the motor is reversed.
Changing direction changes how the belt approaches and leaves each wheel. Small alignment errors may influence the belt differently when the belt path is reversed.
Potential causes include:
- Incorrect tracking-wheel camber
- Misaligned wheel axes
- Improper drive-wheel position
- Frame or tooling-arm flex
- Mechanical play in the tracking assembly
- Wheels that do not run true
- Inconsistent abrasive-belt construction
A reversible motor is only useful when the grinder can maintain predictable tracking in both directions.
How BA Shredder Multi-Axis Tracking Handles Reverse Operation
The BA Shredder uses a multi-axis tracking system with two separate adjustments.
The primary axis adjusts the tracking wheel’s camber.
This adjustment is used during the grinder’s initial setup to dial in the tracking geometry so the belt runs correctly in both forward and reverse.
Once the camber is correct, the primary adjustment is locked.
Normal belt-position changes are then made with the secondary axis, which steers the tracking wheel left and right like the front wheels of a car.
In forward operation:
- Turn the tracking knob right and the belt moves right
- Turn the knob left and the belt moves left
When the belt runs in reverse, the steering response is also reversed—just like steering while backing up a car.
The primary camber adjustment should not need to be changed every time the grinder direction changes.
Why the Initial Camber Setup Matters
The primary tracking adjustment establishes the basic relationship between the tracking wheel and the rest of the belt path.
If this camber is not correctly dialed in, the belt may move significantly whenever the motor direction changes.
Once the grinder tracks properly in both directions, locking the primary adjustment preserves that geometry.
The secondary steering axis can then be used for normal tasks such as:
- Centering a new belt
- Moving the belt across the platen
- Intentionally tracking the belt slightly off-center
- Correcting small differences between abrasive belts
Separating the initial camber setup from everyday tracking makes the grinder easier to adjust and more predictable.
Rigidity Matters in Both Directions
Frame flex and mechanical play may cause the wheel alignment to shift when the belt direction changes.
A part may deflect one way during forward operation and the opposite way during reverse operation.
Important areas include:
- The tracking arm
- The tension arm
- Tooling-arm fit
- Wheel bearings
- Tracking-adjustment hardware
- The grinder frame
- The motor and drive-wheel mounting
Reverse operation does not correct poor geometry or a flexible frame.
The machine must hold the wheel system in a consistent position regardless of belt direction.
The VFD Must Be Configured Correctly
A compatible variable-frequency drive can provide forward and reverse control for a three-phase motor.
Direction may be controlled through:
- The VFD keypad
- An external selector switch
- Separate forward and reverse controls
- A remote control station
The VFD should be wired and programmed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not place a reversing switch between the VFD and the motor. The motor should remain directly connected to the VFD as required by the drive manufacturer.
Stop the belt before changing direction unless the VFD and complete grinder system are specifically configured for controlled direction changes.
Check the Abrasive Belt
Before reversing the grinder, inspect the abrasive belt and follow any directional markings printed on it.
Some belts are designed to run in only one direction because of their splice construction.
Check for:
- A directional arrow
- Splice damage
- Torn edges
- Cracking
- Missing abrasive
- Contamination
- Unusual wear
A damaged belt should be replaced rather than run in the opposite direction.
Reverse Grinding Is a Specialized Advantage
Reverse grinding is not something most operators will use at every grinding station.
On a vertical BA Shredder, its main benefit is the unsupported slack-belt section between the upper 2-inch idler and the 3-inch tracking wheel.
When the grinder is pivoted horizontally, reverse operation becomes useful across more of the machine because the platen, work rest, workpiece, and operator can be positioned differently.
That is where reversibility adds real versatility.
